Evolutionary Astrology: Prescription, Not Description

If you’re an Aries, I’m sure you’ve read about how you are bold and ambitious; how you are a natural leader who isn’t afraid to take charge. And while this is a description that will resonate with many Arian natives, it won’t necessarily fit for all of them. You can have your Sun in Aries and be quite shy and hate conflict. This is why it’s dicey to predict how a personality will manifest with astrology. Human beings are simply too complex to fit into descriptive boxes like that.

According to the Steven Forrest Method, evolutionary astrology looks beyond the description to the prescription. In evolutionary astrology we look at what Aries reveals about the specific prescription for your soul’s healing and growth in this lifetime. After all, your current personality—while useful to understand in order to utilize your gifts most consciously—is ultimately temporary. It’s your soul that continues on.

So, what does the presence of Aries in your birth chart say about your soul? What is your soul majoring in if you have planets in Aries? What skills are you here to practice? What kinds of experiences are you here to pursue?

Aries is Working with Courage and Fear

Through the lens of evolutionary astrology, Aries represents the soul’s intention to develop courage in this incarnation. Courage is often mistaken for fearlessness, but courage is the ability to feel fear and act despite it. Therefore, when our soul chooses to incarnate at a time when there are planets in Aries, we are also working with fear and how to overcome it. This is one reason why some Aries-dominant people don’t necessarily identify with descriptions of Aries—they are actively working to strengthen their Arian muscle and might not be embodying it yet.

Aries is Unbridled Life-force Energy

Aries is the first sign in the zodiac and therefore is associated with the energy of birth, new beginnings, enthusiasm, the moment of becoming. Aries season spans from March 21st to April 19th, and marks the start of spring in the northern hemisphere. The energetic quality of spring corresponds with Aries—the roots are pushing through the soil, fighting to emerge into the life-giving light, baby animals are being born, frozen waters are thawing and becoming alive once more. It is the return of the warmth after the cold. If you have planets in Aries you are learning to harness ambition, initiative, forward momentum, and enthusiasm.

Aries is Right Use of Force

Aries is the energy of the fight and determination to be, to exist, to take specific, physical form, and to protect one’s right to do so. Aries is the phrase “I am.”

Aries logic says “I am me. I am not you. I have the right to be me, and you have the right to be you. We can be different, and that’s ok. There is room for all of us here.” Aries in the birth chart represents the soul’s intention to learn healthy self-worth, healthy understanding of how to set and defend personal boundaries, and how to appropriately take up space.

High or Low Aries? The Choice is Yours

Evolutionary astrology does not label certain placements as positive and others as unfortunate, or negative. Through the lens of evolutionary astrology, every sign has a high manifestation, as well as a lower manifestation. How you respond to Aries depends on your level of maturity and self-awareness.

The highest, most conscious, evolved version of Aries is right use of force. Aries is a fighter, but not a fighter just for fighting’s sake—that brings us into the lower vibrational frequencies. When we are responding well to our Aries placements, we are able to recognize when force, defense, and even aggression, are appropriate and necessary responses. We are able to access the courage to be direct and take decisive action, while simultaneously minimizing unnecessary harm.

If we are not responding well, Aries can look two different ways. One looks like unchecked aggression and an underlying chronic prickliness. Picking fights, dominance just for dominance’s sake, and at its most extreme, violence. On the other hand, it can look like chickening out and letting panic and fear get the best of us.

Where does Aries land your chart? How well are you doing with it?
