Evolutionary Astrology: Prescription, Not Description

If you’re a Taurus, I’m sure you’ve read about how you are reliable, patient, determined, and loyal; how you are maybe a little stubborn and tend toward possessiveness and materialism. And while this is a description that will resonate with many Taurus natives, it won’t necessarily fit for all. It can be dicey to try to predict how personalities will manifest with astrology. Human beings are simply too complex to fit into descriptive boxes.

According to the Steven Forrest Method, evolutionary astrology looks beyond the description to the prescription. In evolutionary astrology we look at what Taurus reveals about the specific prescription for your soul’s healing and growth in this lifetime. After all, your current personality—while useful to understand in order to utilize your gifts most consciously—is ultimately temporary. It’s your soul that continues on.

So, what does the presence of Taurus in your birth chart say about your soul? What is your soul majoring in if you have planets in Taurus? What skills are you here to practice? What kinds of experiences are you here to pursue?

Taurus is the Practice of Embodiment

Through the lens of evolutionary astrology Taurus represents the soul’s intention to slow down and heal nervous system dysregulation through sensual experience. Taurus represents the wisdom of our animal-body, our most instinctual selves. When we have planets in Taurus we have incarnated in order to heal our relationship with our body, to practice calming and soothing ourselves, not through cognitive means but through the senses, and to rediscover ourselves as a part of the natural world, not as separate from nature.

Taurus is Animal Wisdom

When trying to understand the energy of Taurus we need to look to animals for inspiration and guidance. Animals are present-centered and in their bodies. They aren’t worrying about what will happen next year, they aren’t self-conscious, they aren’t entangled in complex psychological dynamics. They aren’t ruminating on their problems, or worrying about how things could go wrong. They are just being. Being alive in their bodies and responding to life as it happens.

Cultivating this ability to simply be present and natural is the evolutionary significance of Taurus. It is a form of mindfulness centered in the physical body.

Taurus is Trauma Recovery

According to Steven Forrest, souls who incarnate with planets in Taurus are recovering from past life trauma, and therefore, are in deep need of rest and recovery in the current lifetime. In order to more deeply understand Taurus, it can be helpful to understand its opposite, Scorpio. Scorpio symbolizes the need for deep psychological excavation, emotional intensity, and penetrative, confrontational honesty. Taurus represents the opposite. While Scorpio represents complexity and drama, Taurus is the absence of it. Taurus is the inner stillness and spaciousness that arises when we let all of our mental attachments and worries go.

Taurus is the Need for Stability

Because Taurus natives have experienced their fair share of complicated, Scorpionic intensity in past lives, they benefit greatly from cultivating stability in this lifetime. Taurus does this through procuring resources needed for success in life– comfortable housing, clothing, enough money to buy what they need. This is why Taurus is associated with materialism, concrete accomplishment, and money. It isn’t because Taurus is shallowly materialistic (although this is always a possibility, if we respond poorly to Taurus), but because there is healing for the soul through having these basic survival concerns covered.

High or Low Manifestation? The Choice is Yours

So, what is the highest, most conscious manifestation of Taurus? It is proving to yourself that you can make it in the world. That you can survive and thrive, and create a stable, safe life for yourself. Some level of financial stability is usually an important part of this Taurian healing. Consciously approaching Taurus is to recognize that time spent with animals and in nature is good medicine for your soul, and that being natural and unrestricted in your own body is healing as well.

What does a low response to Taurus look like? It looks like “paying too much for your money,” as Steven Forrest would say. Low Taurus can focus exclusively on material wealth to a degree that creates imbalance in the direction of rigidity and fear. Unconscious Taurus can be stubborn, materialistic, and avoidant of all discomfort.

Where does Taurus land your chart? How well are you doing with it?
