Evolutionary Astrology: Prescription, Not Description

If you’re a Gemini, I’m sure you’ve read about how you are talkative, curious, intelligent, and quick-witted, or about how you can be indecisive, and at times, unpredictable—what side of The Twins are we going to get? While this is a description that might resonate with many Gemini natives, it won’t necessarily fit for all! Even though pop astrology hinges upon describing the traits associated with each sign, it can be dicey to try to predict how personalities will manifest with astrology. Human beings are simply too complex to fit into descriptive boxes, not to mention that our personalities tend to shift as we change and grow.

According to the Steven Forrest Method, evolutionary astrology looks beyond the description to the prescription. In evolutionary astrology we look at what Gemini reveals about the specific prescription for your soul’s healing and growth in this lifetime. After all, your current personality—while useful to understand, in order to utilize your gifts most consciously—is ultimately temporary. It’s your soul that continues on.

So, what does the presence of Gemini in your birth chart say about your soul? What is your soul majoring in if you have planets in Gemini? What skills are you here to practice? What kinds of experiences are you here to pursue?

Gemini is Beginner’s Mind

Gemini is the mutable air sign. Mutable signs are adaptable and changeable; and air is associated with the mind, ideas, and the intellect. Therefore, Gemini represents the ability of the mind to be influenced and shaped through perception and fresh experience. When we incarnate with planets in Gemini, we are here to cultivate “beginner’s mind”—the ability to approach life with the enthusiasm, openness, and curiosity of a child. This is in response to past life experiences where rigid, dogmatic belief systems had a negative impact upon the soul.

Gemini is Perception

Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the messenger god, and is associated with communication. But in evolutionary astrology we take it a step further and think of Gemini as representing pure perception—all the ways we receive and transmit information through the senses. Gemini in the birthchart means you have come here to open your mind and take in as much information as humanly possible. While Gemini's opposite, Sagittarius, is about how we interpret and assign meaning to what we perceive, and is therefore associated with the archetype of the Philosopher, Gemini is about pure, unprocessed data collection—the archetype of the Journalist.

If you have Gemini in your natal chart, you are here to challenge our own biases and avoid rigidly held beliefs. You are meant to seek out the raw Truth through observation and experience, to ask questions and suspend judgment.

Gemini is Endless Exploration

With planets in Gemini you have incarnated to fit as many varied and interesting experiences into your life as you possibly can. You are here to explore, question everything, and absorb fresh perspectives. This will be healing for your soul.

Gemini in the natal chart means that you have reached a point in your soul’s evolution where you need to recover your sense of wonder, and experience a sense of newness, of astonishment, of the miraculous. A high response to Gemini requires a tolerance for cognitive dissonance and a willingness to sit with uncertainty.

High or Low Manifestation? The Choice is Yours

So, what is the highest, most conscious manifestation of Gemini? A radically open mind that is fueled by varied interests, endless learning, and insatiable curiosity. Often Gemini’s are observed to be talkative, and this is part of your evolutionary strategy—to gather and process information through conversation. So, embrace that! But a high response to Gemini also involves learning to slow down and be a good listener, not simply a good talker.

Which brings us to the low response to Gemini: endless chatter, not enough listening, a scattered mind, superficiality, inability to ground and slow down when necessary, arguing for argument’s sake, inability to commit to long term goals and projects due to being pulled in so many different directions, and attachment to “being right” at the sake of challenging long held beliefs.

Where does Gemini land your chart? How well are you doing with it?
