Evolutionary Astrology: Prescription, Not Description

If you’re a Cancer, I’m sure you’ve read about how you are sensitive, loyal, and protective. That you have emotional depth, a desire to nurture, and a strong intuition. While this is a description that might resonate with many Cancer natives, it won’t necessarily fit for all.

Even though pop astrology hinges upon describing the traits associated with each sign, it can be dicey to try to predict how personalities will manifest with astrology. Human beings are simply too complex to fit into descriptive boxes, not to mention that our personalities tend to shift as we change and grow!

According to the Steven Forrest Method, evolutionary astrology looks beyond the description to the prescription. In evolutionary astrology we look at what Cancer reveals about the specific prescription for your soul’s healing and growth in this lifetime. After all, your current personality—while useful to understand, in order to utilize your gifts most consciously—is ultimately temporary. It’s your soul that continues on.

So, what does the presence of Cancer in your birth chart say about your soul? What is your soul majoring in if you have planets in Cancer? What skills are you here to practice? What kinds of experiences are you here to pursue?

Cancer is Emotional Intelligence

Above all, the sign of Cancer centers around pure, uncensored feeling. Having planets in Cancer signifies your soul-need to become intimately acquainted with your own emotions. You are here to turn your attention inward and introspect upon what you find there.

Cancer is a water sign and is focused on developing the ability to ride the inner waves of emotion as they ebb and flow and to plumb the watery depths of the psyche. Cancer in the birth chart indicates that you are here to deepen your understanding of the human condition—of the emotional vulnerability that we all face—through gaining a thorough understanding of your own inner world and your own psychology.

Cancer is Emotional Healing

Turning inward and feeling is a strategy for Cancer natives that ultimately, in its most conscious evolutionary form, will lead to emotional healing. If you have strong Cancerian signatures in your birthchart you likely have a kind of emotional x-ray vision—the ability to see the wounded child in everyone. Cancer is highly attuned to the realities of human frailty, to the pain and vulnerability that we all carry within us. And when responding to the Cancer placements in your chart consciously and maturely, you will develop a deep well of compassion for both yourself and others.

Your soul work in this lifetime is to heal your emotional wounds through finding unconditional love and compassion for your own inner child. From there, you can extend that compassion and empathy to others, in order to assist them in healing too. The key here: the healing always begins with you. You cannot skip the part about healing yourself and go straight to nurturing others. That will lead you into the low, unconscious manifestations of Cancer.

Cancer is Appropriate Self-Protection

Cancer is a very sensitive energy, and part of responding well to the Cancer placements in your chart is learning how to navigate the world as a deeply feeling person. Much like the Crab, Cancerian people need protective “shells.” That’s just a reality when you are wired to feel so much—you have to learn to protect your raw, vulnerable parts. It might take a while to trust people and fully let them in, and that’s ok. It might be difficult to put yourself out there and reveal your thoughts and feelings—also ok! Learning appropriate self-protection is just part of the package when we have prominent Cancer energy in our chart, embrace it!

High or Low Manifestation? The Choice is Yours

Evolutionary astrology does not label certain placements as positive and others as unfortunate, or negative. Through the lens of evolutionary astrology, every sign has a high manifestation, as well as a lower manifestation. How you respond to Cancer depends on your level of maturity and self-awareness.

The highest, most conscious, evolved version of Cancer means turning inward and developing mature self-awareness and emotional understanding. Learning to nurture and care for the most vulnerable parts of yourself, and then offering that care to others.

If you are not responding well to the Cancer in your chart, you will overly identify with the caregiver archetype, trying to care for and nurture everyone in your path—even those who don’t want it and aren’t asking for it! You will use caregiving as a way of dissociating from your own needs, and your self-worth will depend upon others needing you. Or you might lean so heavily in the direction of self-protection that you hide out from life, never taking risks, and never letting anyone really know you or see you.

Where does Cancer land your chart? How well are you doing with it?
