Evolutionary Astrology: Prescription, Not Description

If you’re a Libra, I’m sure you’ve read about how you are diplomatic, fair-minded, and focused on harmony and balance. Or maybe that you are an overthinker, who is indecisive and conflict-avoidant. While these descriptors may resonate with some Libra natives, it won’t necessarily fit for all.

Even though pop astrology hinges upon describing the traits associated with each sign, it can be dicey to predict how personalities will manifest with astrology. Human beings are just too complex to fit into descriptive boxes, not to mention that our personalities tend to shift as we change and grow!

According to the Steven Forrest Method, evolutionary astrology looks beyond the description to the prescription. In evolutionary astrology we look at what Libra reveals about the specific prescription for your soul’s healing and growth in this lifetime. After all, your current personality—while useful to understand, in order to utilize your gifts most consciously—is ultimately temporary. It’s your soul that continues on.

So, what does the presence of Libra in your birth chart say about your soul? What is your soul majoring in if you have planets in Libra? What skills are you here to practice? What kinds of experiences are you here to pursue?

Libra is the Practice of Inner Peace

Libra is associated with the Scales because Libra represents the evolutionary path toward inner balance, harmony, and equanimity. When we incarnate with Libra in our natal chart we have come here to improve our ability to maintain a state of calm and equilibrium, even when external circumstances are stressful. High Libra represents a state of genuine nervous system regulation.

Libra’s Strategy is Beauty

Libra is associated with the arts, diplomacy, and justice. What do those three concepts have in common? Cooperation. When artwork is aesthetically pleasing, it’s because the colors, or the different constituents of the piece, are working together in such a way that creates beauty. Same with diplomacy—the disparate parts are finding ways to work together and compromise. Justice is the balancing out of opposites—right and wrong, good and evil—creating order out of chaos.

For the Libran soul, this bringing of order to chaos is the healing medicine. Whether that’s through tidying up a sloppy room, or putting colors down on canvas in a visually pleasing way, or finding just the right sentence structure to convey a complex thought, or through watching a particularly beautiful sunset at the end of a hard day. Creating external order helps Librans create and sustain the inner peace their soul is seeking. Seeking out and enjoying beauty is not a triviality for those with prominent Libra in the natal chart, it is of deep spiritual significance.

Libra is Embracing Paradox

If you have significant Libra in your natal chart, another way you are seeking inner balance is through developing your ability to tolerate the paradoxical nature of reality. You are here to learn how to hold two (or more) truths at once, to embrace the fact that the world isn’t black and white but infinite shades of grey. This is why one of the archetypes for Libra is the diplomat. A skilled diplomat can hold multiple perspectives simultaneously and find the common ground between them. When we are responding in a healthy way to our Libra placements we are skilled at understanding other people’s perspectives.

High or Low Manifestation? The Choice is Yours

Evolutionary astrology does not label certain placements as positive and others as unfortunate, or negative. Through the lens of evolutionary astrology, every sign has a high manifestation, as well as a lower manifestation. How you respond to Libra depends on your level of maturity and self-awareness.

The highest, most conscious, evolved version of Libra is the ability to hold multiple perspectives at once while simultaneously not losing track of your own perspective (having healthy mental and emotional boundaries, in other words). It is fostering a connection with your inner artist, creating beauty around you, and utilizing that beauty to create inner calm. Conscious Libra is also well-developed social skills, wielded in an authentic way.

If you are not responding well to the Libra in your chart, you will have a difficult time holding on to your own perspective, which may lead to chronic fence-sitting, indecisiveness, and anxiety. Don’t be afraid to assert a clear opinion or thought! Low Libra is people-pleasing and inauthentic, saying what other people want to hear instead of what is true.

Where does Libra land your chart? How well are you doing with it?
