Evolutionary Astrology: Prescription, Not Description

If you’re a Sagittarius, I’m sure you’ve read about how you are freedom-loving, optimistic, and adventurous. Or maybe that you are careless, boastful, and commitment-phobic. While these descriptors may resonate with some Sagittarian natives, they won’t necessarily fit for all (what if you’re a Capricorn Rising and have massive stellium in Cancer, for instance?).

Even though pop astrology hinges upon describing the traits associated with each sign, it can be dicey to predict how personalities will manifest with astrology. Human beings are just too complex to fit into descriptive boxes, not to mention that our personalities tend to shift as we change and grow!

According to the Steven Forrest Method, evolutionary astrology looks beyond the description to the prescription. In evolutionary astrology we look at what Sagittarius reveals about the specific prescription for your soul’s healing and growth in this lifetime. After all, your current personality—while useful to understand, in order to utilize your gifts most consciously—is ultimately temporary. It’s your soul that continues on.

So, what does the presence of Sagittarius in your birth chart say about your soul? What is your soul majoring in if you have planets in Sagittarius? What skills are you here to practice? What kinds of experiences are you here to pursue?

Sagittarius as the Gypsy, the Student, and the Philosopher

Three of the archetypes associated with Sagittarius are the Gypsy, the Student, and the Philosopher. These three figures have something in common, they are all expanding their horizons. And that is the life-blood of the Sagittarian soul path: always learning, always growing, always seeking to understand the underlying meaning and purpose of life.

The Gypsy. or Traveler, does this through seeing different places and having cross cultural experiences. The Student, or Scholar, does this through reading books, taking classes, and challenging the intellect. Both lead to the Philosopher, the culmination of the Sagittarian process: formulating your own belief system and developing true wisdom. As a Sag, you are meant to be asking the big questions.

Life As a Quest

With Sagittarius in your birth chart, your soul work is to approach life as one long Hero’s Journey—-an endless quest for knowledge, understanding, and meaning. You have come here to embrace adventure for adventure's sake, but also as a means to an end—to learn about the nature of life and formulate a belief system that connects you with something larger than yourself. Sagittarius is about developing faith. Not necessarily in a specific religion, but faith in life and trusting that life is inherently meaningful.

It can be helpful to think about Gemini, the opposite sign in the zodiac, in order to more fully understand Sagittarius. Gemini is the Journalist. Journalists are concerned with data and facts. They are concerned with what is objectively true in any given situation and avoid intuition and other less-linear avenues to knowing. While Sagittarius, as the Philosopher, is concerned with the subjective terrain of morals, ethics, and values, and with asking questions that are too complex to have one singular “correct” answer.

High or Low Manifestation? The Choice is Yours

Evolutionary astrology does not label certain placements as positive and others as unfortunate, or negative. Through the lens of evolutionary astrology, every sign has a high manifestation, as well as a lower manifestation. How you respond to Sagittarius depends on your level of maturity and self-awareness.

The highest, most conscious, evolved version of Sagittarius is curious and considers a broad range of perspectives. The high road for Sag is an open mind, a willingness to stretch your boundaries, take chances, and make “interesting mistakes.” To live life to the fullest and to learn from it. You are here to collect wisdom through your own lived experiences and through the lived experiences of others.

If you are not responding well to the Sagittarius in your chart, you might be dogmatic and preachy, believing you’ve got it all figured out. Low Sagittarius lacks humility, lacks tact, and can come across as egotistical and abrasive in their approach.

Where does Sagittarius land in your chart? How well are you doing with it?
